Monday is the beginning of my fourth term at Southern New Hampshire University’s grad school program in English and Creative Writing. Since my concentration is screenwriting, I’ve been doing a ton of reading in preparation.
One thing that really stood out to me was a piece of advice in a book called Crafting Short Screenplays That Connect by Claudia Hunter Johnson. She recommends people-watching and people-listening in order to create original characters. I realized I do this naturally, so I was happy to read that. The one and only play I’ve ever written was based on a conversation I overheard one day while eating lunch.
But the book really inspired me to start going to places I don’t normally go to – the airport, sporting events, bus stops, tattoo parlors – all of these places will attract people I don’t normally interact with. I think that this advice will not only make me a better writer, but a better person as I learn to empathize with people I don’t normally see or talk to. I’m really excited to see what this semester brings!
Attached is a mock fairy tale I wrote called Cinderale.
Enjoy and have an inspired week!
